- <p> DIED. Alexander Dubcek, 70, reformist leader of
- Czechoslovakia whose attempt to introduce "socialism with a human
- face" during the Prague Spring of 1968 was crushed by Warsaw Pact
- tanks; of injuries suffered in an auto accident in September; in
- Prague. Though Dubcek's goal in instituting reforms was to
- strengthen socialism, the Kremlin feared erosion of party power.
- After the crackdown, Dubcek was stripped of his party membership.
- He re-emerged in November 1989 to join Vaclav Havel in
- proclaiming a democratic Czechoslovakia.
