  15. <p>     DIED. Alexander Dubcek, 70, reformist leader of
  16. Czechoslovakia whose attempt to introduce "socialism with a human
  17. face" during the Prague Spring of 1968 was crushed by Warsaw Pact
  18. tanks; of injuries suffered in an auto accident in September; in
  19. Prague. Though Dubcek's goal in instituting reforms was to
  20. strengthen socialism, the Kremlin feared erosion of party power.
  21. After the crackdown, Dubcek was stripped of his party membership.
  22. He re-emerged in November 1989 to join Vaclav Havel in
  23. proclaiming a democratic Czechoslovakia.
